Question: Best exotic destination to go surfing for a beginner (for cheap!)?
I’m just starting to learn how to surf, and my big thing now is to go somewhere exotic to surf for Spring break, somewhere where the flights don’t cost an arm and a leg and accomodation is pretty cheap. I was thinking Indonesia, but wasn’t sure how cheap it is to stay there. Also, I’m a beginner (hopefully an intermediate by Spring break!) so I don’t need MASSIVE 14 ft. waves, just a tropical place to have fun in the waves.
Thanks!

Indonesia, is a pretty hard-core place to go for a beginner, and the waves are hard-core too. I suggest, Costa Rica because there are resorts there and there are a variety of waves for a variety of skill levels.
I think it might be easier to travel there since it’s only in Central America. Save indonesia for when your more experienced so you can get the most out if the trip.
Also, airlines tend to not like surfers, so watch this video: http://www.dailystoke.com/surfing-travel/how-to-pack-your-surfboard-travel-bag/

A place that is exotic and that has mild waves is hard to find. I would say southern California is good for beginners if you go to for example Huntington Beach. Or maybe the North-Western America, like Porand or Seattle.
Hope that helped.

Mexico
Along CA coast (just surf your way up/down the PCH)

Hawaii’s not a bad option. South shore gets some swells during spring but it’s usually not super intense. The big wave reputation for hawaii is from the north shore, which swells hit during the winter. If it’s not north shore season, the waves are usually small-medium the rest of the year. They also have surf lessons at waikiki and ala moana for beginners.
Other people had good recommendations also. Upside to hawaii though is you don’t have to worry about exchanging money currency and passport because it’s part of the US. There’s some hotels there you can stay at for 50-70 a night, they’re not 5-star or anything like that but it’s a good enough place to sleep at night for the next day, and within walking distance from the beach.

mexico or hawaii. or costa rica, pretty cheap, more exotic than both, and has some good size waves and beach breaks.
I just came back from Tahiti, I was there for work so I’m not sure how much a hotel costs since someone put me up but I think its a bit pricey for stuff like hotel and food. not sure how much plane tickets are. However: Its a beautiful place because its very remote and laid back. Mostly coral breaks but theres a few well known sand beaches that many beg/int ppl go to. And it has a variety of size of wave. knee high to big wave surfing depend on where you go.
