Q&A: Broke my tibula and fibula what can i expect?
Was jsut getting ready to go down to panama to surf for a month 3 days before i left broke both my tibula and fibula (my ankle) skateboarding, all this happened june 9th. had surgery on the 10th, i dont know which bone is which mut hte skinnier one has a plate and 10 skrews ( it split up) and the other one has three really long screws( a piece at the bottom popped off, so they said i would be laid up for 6 weeks. jsut went back got the bad news now its 8 weeks. so super stoked. and they say i have to have a brace on it after also? its turning to huricane season. i cant do this. has anyone had anything like this and what did you have to go through, and all that. when can i surf! oh ya and my freinds are still down in panama

Hopefully you are a good healer. I have seen people put permanently out of service with this type of injury. Sounds like you really broke it good too, if you needed plates. Sounds like you fell off a rail.
Keep your weight off it till it knits. Follow the doctor’s instructions to the letter. Not only do the bones need to heal, but your muscles will need to heal from the surgery as well. Hopefully you have access to physical therapy, that will help you get back up and to full strength sooner. Sometimes they will prescribe a TENS unit and that will help speed healing.
My advice is to let it heal fully, regain your strength, and have fun surfing next year. If it heals fully, no problem. If you push it too hard and re-injure it, it may never heal right and you may limp for life.
