Q&A: how profitable can a watersport rental company be in hawaii?
I am researching about opening a watersport rental company in a smal town in hawaii. The rentals would be boogie boards, snorkel equipment, bodyboards and small surf boards or possibly longboards. Just looking for some good advice from someone. Is it profitable at all if it is only rentals.

The pictures have nothing to do with the content!!
The following is the answer:

i would think rentals would be more profitable than sales…hawaii is mostly tourists, so they wont be bringing their own gear and definitely wont be buying…the locals already have their own gear…the only issue would be how much competetion is there already–i know Snorkel Bob’s is on almost every corner in the busier parts of hawaii…but if you find the right location it should work, afterall there is no “off season” in hawaii so you can be open year round…hell i might try it too, thanks for the idea!!!

better have good liabilty insurance. you are renting potentially dangerous equipment to many people who have never even seen the ocean. insurance rates will be sky high, go to haleiwa and go check out the board rental shops there.

depending on rent, so so. maintenance and upkeep is high, go rent jetski’s, you can get 100.00 an hour for them.

depends on what you mean by “small town”. the small towns dont have the tourist volume that would be needed for a rental company. for a small town you would need a retail/rental combo and even then the market is fairly saturated. there is also the rediculous overhead and liability insurance to worry about…do yourself a favor and open up a sandwich shop instead.
