Surf lessons in Waikiki start about $ 50 for a 1-2hour lesson and go up to $ 100 or more – check out the websites below for good surf schools

Well there’s the Waikiki Beach Boys, Han’s Hedemann’s Surf School, and Hawaiian Fire Surf School (all firefighters). You can look on craigslist.org for a teacher, or you can ask a local to try and teach you if they have the patience. You can rent a board down on the beach at Waikiki and just try go out and do it yourself. Main thing is to watch everyone first and then try it out. Go out, turn around when the wave is coming (or when you see everyone else turning around), as the wave approaches, paddle paddle, paddle, and as the wave meets you to start picking the board up, quickly do a push up on the board and get to your feet. The rest is balance and leaning to turn. Main thing is you have to be able to do a push up and be able to prop onto your feet in one smooth motion. Practice on the sand first.
