The easiest answer your question is the same answer to: Is Seattle a safe place to live? There’s nothing particularly dangerous about Jaco, it just depends what you do and who you hang out with. Overall, the people are friendly. I’ve stayed in Jaco on many trips and always had a safe trip. It is an amazing beach. Another great surf town with less tourists is uvita, or dominical. They are south of manuel antonio. They have great waves and it is more relaxing because there are less people.

The east side of costa rica, limon, is known to be little more dangerous but is improving. But, the surfing is not as good as the west coast.

Costa Rica is beautiful no matter where you live! And out of all the beaches for surfing the one in Jaco is definitley the best of them all, biggest waves in the world that many people come to surf!!! Jaco itself is really safe and theres so many fun things to do there.

Enjoy your new life in Jaco, Costa Rica!!!!!!

Costa Rica is quickly becoming unsafe. Crime against property has always been a problem, but now they are starting to get violent. Armed robberies are on the rise. Jaco hasn’t gotten as dangerous as San Jose yet, but it’s coming, no doubt.

Btw, do you have a visa to move there? You can only stay 90 days as a tourist. You will have to leave CR for 72 hours every 90 days.

I disagree with one of the other Post, Costa Rica as a whole is not becoming unsafe, in fact. it is considered one of the Top ten places to retire. San Jose on the other hand, is becoming increasing ” Usafe” if you will, but this is limited to petty thieves, pick pockets and those who prey on tourist who are easy to spot in thier rental cars. Word to the wise, you may not be confronted, but you leave that rental car full of goodies, when you come back they may be gone. They are also fond of cell phones. The Costa Rica is emerging out of an archaic telecom system (TDMA) into the 3 G market, the one most countried use for high speed access to laptops and Smart phones. Don’t carry you phone in your hand. Violent crime is rare.

I agree with Kevin and totally Disagree with Orange. Down town San Jose is not a Favorit place as any big city’s down town has higher crime. I live in Santa Ana and have never felt concerned. Very well policed, clean and no homeless people. I work in Playa Tambor and have a condo there and again no problems. I also have property (lots)in Playa Hermosa, Jaco and find it very beautiful.

As Kevin mentioned you should use diligence when you travel and not wear gold neck-less and large diamond rings with big cameras around your neck. Policing in Costa Rica is getting more strict (in my opinion) as more are being hired, fines are getting higher, and penalties are getting more stern. This is a deterrent for potential thieves.

People are friendly, and if you live there you will come to know many of them.

I was there for one week, some years ago.
the most dangerous thing in Jaco Beach is a bridge over a river on the main street. It had no railings and was poorly lite. Plus crocodiles live in that river.

If you read “orange’s” answer properly, you will find that his advice is best. Too many folks think because they’ve been there once or twice, they can deduct from their experience, which may have been perfectly fine. We have visited for the last fourteen years annually, and I can tell you, the country has changed, and not for the better.
I preferred it when all roads were bad, an no “all inclusive” spoiled the vacation experience.

Jaco you can safely give a pass and as orange says, and with respect to moving to CR, it’s not that easy to live there. you can’t work, for openers, and need a steady and guaranteed income (proven), to even contemplate immigration. a working knowledge of Spanish would also help.

As for surfing, google these places – CR is about sixth on my list.

Gold Coast, Australia
Mentawai Islands, Indonesia
Jeffreys Bay, South Africa (my favourite)
Fuerteventura, Spain
El Salvador
Costa Rica:
Playa Naranjo, Witches Rock and the quality right river mouth point break at Potrero Grande (Ollies Point).
Jaco has a sandy bottom, decent swells for beginners and is a fun beach break, but tends to close out on larger swells.
Bali, Indonesia
Santa Catarina, Brazil
Samoa
