Question: Oahu Hawaii – North Shore or Waikiki?
I’m going to Hawaii for my honeymoon and one of the islands we are visiting is Oahu. We are still deciding what area to stay in though. I’ve heard Waikiki is very crowded and the beach is small, but that there’s a lot to do around that area. We were looking at the Hilton Waikiki if we stayed there. Then on the other hand there is the North Shore which is quieter and some were saying has a nicer beach (but is it more for just surfing?). If we stayed there it would be at the Turtle Bay resort. We’re kind of torn where to stay though. Although we will have a car, we know that its an hour drive between the two, and we’d like to be able to go to the beach and be close to the hotel so that we can shower and change after we’re done. If anyone has any info that will help us make a decision I would really appreciate it! Thanks!
Ok here’s more details because as someone posted below, they wanted to know what other islands we were going to. Well, we are staying for 3 weeks so we have another 2 islands we are visiting: The Big Island and Maui. I hope this helps you all give us good advice, we’re really torn!

Hi I am VERY familiar with oahu, and I would strongly suggest you stay in waikiki. Hilton is very nice and there beach is really nice, just about everything is in walking distance even Ala moana shopping center. There is a lot to do in waikiki and everything is close.

North shore is nice but can get boring, there’s not much to do except go swimming.

surfagrl is correct. Unless you are planning on a lot of surfing Waikiki would be better. Much more to do. You can use the bus or walk to the beach. It is a very beautiful Island.

The North Shore gets the big waves in winter, but they’re calmer around summer — good enough for snorkeling with sea turtles and stuff like that.

It really depends on what you’d like to do. Waikiki would have more people and shopping and restaurants and stuff like that. Turtle Bay would be more removed, scenic, and probably relaxing.

You say that *one* of the islands you’re visiting is Oahu. It would help to know how long you’re staying and where else you’re going. If you’re hitting the other islands, you might be best off doing Waikiki while on Oahu and going to the attractions like the Bishop Museum — use the other islands for your scenic relaxing stuff instead. Waikiki is also much closer to the airport if you’re going to the other islands, so you can maximize your time.

It depends on what kind of person you are and how you imagine your trip. Do you like nature, peace and quiet? Do you want many restaurants and shops nearby? Waikiki has a lot more options when it comes to dining, activities, entertainment, etc. But Turtle Bay is a lot less hectic and more peaceful. In Waikiki, there are quite a few homeless lining the sidewalks and they are not a pretty sight (it has gotten worse in recent years). Also, when walking along Waikiki’s main promenade, there are many vendors who will try to sell you things and hand you flyers, brochures, etc. It is very commercialized. Turtle Bay is not like this at all. It’s basically just one big resort surrounded by a golf course, the ocean and nature. If you plan to rent a car, you can easily explore the north shore beaches from there. From Waikiki, you could easily do a tour of Oahu’s south shore.

NORTH SHORE

You can always visit waikiki for the day but the north shore beaches are faaar more amazing and less crowded. There is a company called hawaii beach time that delivers beach gear to you anywhere on oahu and we used them on the north shore during our trip a few times. We had them drop off an umbrella, 2 chairs, snorkels, and some other fun stuff and they just pick it up when youre done. Waikiki is overrated. Just fun people watching thats it.
