Q&A: When is the best time of year to visit Kauai, Hawaii?
I don’t like crowds and like to to outdoors activities (hiking, scuba, snorkle, maybe try surfing), and would like to go when the water is clear and weather is pleasant. I’m also coming from the stormy Oregon coast, so a little rain doesn’t bother me. For those of you who have gone several times, when was the best time of year and why? (Answers besides “any time,” please.)

The Winter Months, January thru March are a good time because of the humpback whales that migrate through the islands. Watching the whales from your lanai is an awesome experience. You will also avoid the crowds of the summer time, but whale watching does draw its fair share of visitors. If you want to avoid crowds as much as possible, then I would say Sept-Dec, these are considered the “off-season”; no summer travelers and the whales haven’t arrived yet.

September or October. It won’t be as crowded as summer or Christmas, & the weather is going to be better than it will be in the winter.

If you want to be in the water, DO NOT COME DURING WINTER! There are dangerous winter swells that bring jelly fish on shore and more tourists die during the dangerous winter months than any other time of year. April or May would be your best bet. It’s still in the off-season, but it’s late enough in the year for spring, so the water should be good and the weather may be a little rainy, but warm altogether. It’ll be cheaper and you’ll beat the mid-June rush of people.
September and October are full of the ‘super-savers’ trying to get in a vacation after the rush and taking advantage of off-season deals.

I go to Hawaii every year to visit family and my favorite time is early May.
It’s not too hot, kids are still in school, the rainy season is over and the large winter swells are gone.
If you want to try surfing I’d recommend a lesson from a local instructor and I always refer beginners to this great article that has some step-by-step tips for learning:

Have fun!!!

I would recommend end of May- beginning of June: not very hot, not very rainy, and kids are still in school – not crowded, of September – beginning on November (same reasons).
