Q&A: Where is the best intermediate surfing spot in Hawaii?
Looking to surprise my boyfriend with a trip to Hawaii. Most likely will plan for later this year. We both bodyboard, and are looking for some good surfing spots near to where we will stay. We aren’t beginners, but sure aren’t professionals either. Any detailed info would help =]

If you plan on coming this summer, more likely you should be targeting any beach that face the east or south – as the ocean currents are a lot more alive in these directions. North-facing shores during the summer are usually flat to 2-feet at the most. Hawaii is currently in its annual hurricane season, and so far this summer the winds are quite dead.
If you are serious about surfing in Hawaii, I’d put off your trip until winter (November start.) During this period, north and west facing shores should be alive – reaching anywhere from 5 to 10 foot swells on average.
You did not mention what island(s) you plan on visiting. There are surfing spots on Oahu, Maui and Kauai, but Oahu has the best overall. For Oahu, the better spots during summer is Sandy Beach, Ala Moana Beach and Waikiki Beach. During the winter, North Shore locations – including Haleiwa and Sunset Beach are great. If you’re interested in body surfing, I’d recommend Makaha on the leeward side of Oahu.
