Q&A: The big island, Maui or Kauai -have a 2 year old?
Need some help!
Hawaii for 7-10 days would like to stay on the big island, Maui or Kauai -have a 2 year old.
My husband is an adrenilen junky and would like to do something intense every other day. I’m fine staying beachside with baby or doing something all our own. Any help on which island would suit us best?
Hubby would like to:
Snorkle
Hike
Cliff jumping
seadoos
Horseback riding
Paddle boarding
learn to surf
possibly sky dive
Are there volcanos on all the islands or just the big island. I understand the big island might not be suitable for a 2 year old, but I would LOVE to see a volcano.
Can someone help me decide which island(s)?
This will be our first time in Hawaii and we’re not crazy about a bunch of crowds. Not sure if we’ll ever get a chance to go back. What interests me is hiking to a waterfall and bike riding. Things we can take our son on. Our son also loves animals so i thought maybe him and I could do that one day while daddy does something more active. Also, does anyone have any great family hotel recommendations right on the beach. Does anyone also know if the hotels offer childcare where they can play with other kids while we venture off for a few hours?
The baby does well in the car as long as we have the DVD player.
I just want this vacation to be truly magical and not so much feeling as though we’re nickle and dimmed every corner and in some tourist trap.

The pictures have nothing to do with the content!!

I live on the big island in hilo its prety calm noting special but you could go hiking into a crater of a volcano in volcano national park its prety rough and dangerous. All island has volcanos but the big island has a active one you can see on a air or boat ride. But with a 2 year old maui is the island for you

With exception of cliff jumping and an active volcano, Maui would provide all the activities you mention, as would Kauai. The Big Island of Hawaii is the only island that has an active volcano and well worth visiting even if you did not get to view actual lava flowing. Beautiful rain forest setting filled with local birds, ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs, and some interesting hiking trails abound.
The problem with a 2-yr old on the Big Island is that it involves a lot of windshield time and most 2-year olds don’t do well on long car rides. However, if your two-year old is an exception to this rule, you would find everything on your list on the Big Island as well. None of the islands offer cliff jumping, at least, not that I am aware of.
Sky diving might be more readily found on Oahu, but I can’t say with 100% certainty that its not available on the other islands. However, you can add zip-lining to your husband’s list of activities on all three of the islands you list, coincidentally, only those three islands.
I invite you to check out my website, starting at www.myhawaiionline.com/islands.html, which will give you a general overview of what you can expect to find on each island, then you can start looking for more specific information in the Activities and/or Special Places section. You can also find lots of information at the official state of Hawaii site www.gohawaii.com, although its easy to get overwhelmed with all the ads.

I live on Kauai and i think its perfect for your vacation. im sure that your husband can do all of those things here, but there are no active volcanos. there aren’t a lot of crowds and most all beaches on the north shore is baby friendly. the island isn’t very big, so if you were to drive from the north shore to the west side it would be about 2 1/2 to 3 hours.
good hotels on north shore:
St. Regis
Hanalei Bay Resort

Oahu I think would be more for your husband as there are more opportunities to do intense stuff as you listed. You can also go to lots of places with your son like the zoo and water park and beaches. Down side is that there are lots of tourists.
Kauai is nice, but limited for your husband’s intense sports craving. You can hike to a waterfall after kayaking up a river. Very nice that you could take your son to. Lots of hiking. Your husband may get bored.
Big Island is a nice family island with not too many tourist like Oahu. The volcano is there, but don’t expect to see some super fantastic thing like you see in movies or in the advertising because it’s rarely like that. Some times the red lava is flowing, but not always. The most you will probably see is some smoke. The volcano park is a great place for a family to go to. If you have a baby backpack for hiking, that would be ideal for this type of trip. We also have a zoo there with a white tiger your son might enjoy seeing as well as monkeys.
Maui would be a good choice for a family, but expensive and lots of tourist. Lot of beautiful beaches and hiking. You can ride horses there.
