Hermosa Beach, California. Some of the original surf board makers started out there, like Dewey Weber.
Redondo Beach was the home of George Freeth, original Irish/Hawaiian surfer who brought the sport of surfing to the California coast in 1907. He cut down the clumsy hardwood boards to invent the first “long board” and gave demonstrations in front of the popular Redondo Beach Hotel. Lots of beautiful people, fresh seafood restaurants, and the Redondo Beach Lobster Festival held in October features a number of tribute bands, surf music ala the Beach Boys. Check with the chambers of commerce in Hermosa and Redondo for more info.

There are beaches in San Diego great for surfing…..Black’s Beach is one of the best but it is not a town.
Pacific Beach is probably closer to what you are asking. It’s a beach town where you can rollerblade, beach volleyball, bars, restaurants, and beach shops. For more info on beaches in San Diego go to: http://www.sandiego-romantics.com/romantic-beaches-in-san-diego.html
Santa Cruz is another unique beach town with an amusement park on the beach. This coastal town is about an hour south of San Francisco.

My 9 year old boy Kai has been surfing and skateboarding since he was in diapers. He spent his early years on the beaches of Oahu. We now live and surf in the frigid waters of Northern California, where my kids hit the Pacific 3-4 times a week.
