for a base, i would definitely go with sex wax. and on top of that, i prefer sticky bumps. be sure to apply it by moving the wax in circles and you only need to put wax where your feet will be and a little in between. don’t waste your time or your wax by putting it anywhere near the nose of the board… unless you plan on hanging ten icon smile Q&A: How do you apply surf wax to a board correctly?

I would use sticky bumps for tropical weather. Apply it in a circular motion to all the areas where you plan on putting your feet. I have found that if you put it too far on the sides when you try to sit on your board it sticks to your thighs. So don’t put it too far on the sides. And no need to waste wax on the ends of the board. Just apply it where you put your feet.

Remember to scrap off wax after each use and apply new so you don’t get a board rash.

Have fun!

I would go with sticky bumps base coat and cool or cold top coat depending on when you are surfing – summer or winter.

PS – you do not need to change your wax every time you surf just apply a little more top coat each time you go and when it gets dirty then take it off.

Sticky Bumps is the best. California is pretty cold, so you will probably want some colder water wax. Ask your local surf shop about that.

There are many different ways to apply wax, and surfers prefer to do it in different ways. I like to make a diagonal checkerboard across the part of the board where I stand on (the whole board if it is a longboard). You should use the corner of the wax bar and use not too much but not too little pressure when applying it. Then you should make circles on the board when you put on the wax.

You should take some lessons. It sounds like you are new to surfing, but I may be wrong. Lessons are a great way to learn and they are cheap. Weather you take them from an experienced friend or a surf instructor, you should always take some lessons.

I personally use Mrs Palmers… I have had the best luck with it and i love the way it smells icon smile Q&A: How do you apply surf wax to a board correctly?
I hate sex wax, yah cute name but it sucks.
sticky bumps is #2 for me..
you already got good tips on how to wax. make sure you dont push down to hard and smear it everywhere and scrape before you rewax. I hear the water is cold in California so I would get cold or warm water wax

Pretty much what every one else said. Circular motion where you put your feet. On a mal where you’re riding the nose, its pretty much the entire deck. On a short board, stay away from the nose. After a while you’ll end up with a smaller surface that you need to wax, because you’ll know exactly where your feet are hitting the deck.

One other thing, don’t do as someone suggested and scrape off your wax after every surf. Just when it builds up or your changing water temperatures. Like going from cold water to the tropics. Wax is designed to work at particular temperatures.

Also it actually helps minimize compressions on your deck caused when you jump up or put a knee into the deck. So keep it on.

Cheers
