Q&A: Are we being spied on when we surf the Internet?
I have a friend who has stopped using a computer because he believes we are being spied on by the Government and the ISP’s. No, he’s not on medicine and he doesn’t wear aluminum foil hats.

The pictures have nothing to do with the content!!

yup, we are spied somehow but if you don’t do anything wrong. Why so scared?
Answer by festus_porkchop
A bit paranoid is he. He must want to hide something that is not quite legal.

I wouldn’t doubt that we’re being spied on. And with the new bill that Bush has just pushed through. It’s perfectly legal now.

If you go to certain web sites or call certain countries on your phone the answer is yes. That doesn’t mean every time, all the time, but if you spend a lot of time on web sites the current administration deems dangerous or questionable relative to terrorism (and that can be a wide definition) you may be monitored from time to time.

It is true… all sites you go to keep your IP records and use them for different reasons, I just got my eBay acct canned because my Mom bid on a sweater she wanted and it wasn’t a fake bid, she buys stuff from me all the time, she usually doesn’t bid, I have more than 1 of stuff and just sell her give her etc… but eBay tracked her IP and linked it to my IP when I logged onto my account from her house like 2 years ago! BIG BROTHER
so yes your friend is right … and that was just eBay…

I doubt it. I can see how they could but if the public ever found out there would be billions of very angry people. How could they possibly monitor everyone? That would be an impossible task.

Well, actually he’s right. Whenever you go on the internet you are in a “fish bowl”. Everybody out there can see you and everything you do can be tracked.
You have little to fear from the government, they are busy dealing with real threats and don’t have time for you or your friend. You need to be more afraid of the hackers and the identity thieves that are about 80% of the web. And, by the way, if you recieve emails from the African continent, particularly, Nigeria; Or, anywhere overseas, beware. If it is about your winning some lottery, or some money management plan, dont even respond. Delete the message without opening or immediately. Make sure you have a very good internet security package (suite) on your PC and keep it current. One big help is a “ghost surf” program which blinds your identitiy in most situations.
These threats are real. Do not take them for granted. below are some legitimate links that can tell you more.
