Question: What’s life like in California?
I’m 24 and I’m in the middle of earning my master’s degree in teaching. I live in upstate NY and I’m thinking about moving when I get my degree, which will be about a year and a half from now. One of the places I’m considering is California, possibly San Diego. It sounds like a cool place, ideal weather, great atmosphere, and it’s near a beach (I’ve never been to one). I imagine I’d have to get use to tremors and give up white Christmases, though. I want to know what I should consider about California in order to make my decision. Are there any other cities I should think about? Is there more to California life than blonds in bikinis, surfing, and celebrities?

I used to live in Benicia, close to San Francisco, then moved to Austin, Texas. In Benicia, never needed an air conditioner. Wish I were still there.

The earth tremors are only strong enough to notice 2-3 times a year. And there are mountains with tons of snow as hour from LA or San Diego.

And while there are blonds on the beach, unless you are a hard core beaxh person, it gets boring fast. I live 2 miles from Newport Beach and I have been there maybe once a year since I moved here 8 years ago. This year I just wanted to see the high surf during a big wind and rain storm on Christmas Day.

And you don’t see celebrities. I have seen exactly one B list celebrity in the last 8 years and that was Ted Danson who I saw seated 2 reows in front of me at a Stones Concert in Anaheim.

As for weather today, I was shopping in Hollywood a couple hours ago and it was cool, in the high 50s. It has been cool and rainy here for the last month. So you still get weather here.

But I love it here and as long as California will accept your teaching credentials, you’ll love it here.

we moved here (san diego) from chicago and while it’s not nearly as urban there are pockets of “vibe” — hillcrest, north park, mission hills. the city is very different as a resident versus visitor. i will say that being single and female is not a good thing…hard to meet quality men.

here is a site that has all the san diego stuff for free…it’s for people who care about healthy living, but it does give some great info on places to eat, run, stay, etc. www.athleticmindedtraveler.com. just go to browse cities (button at top) and then choose san diego.

Don’t let anyone fool you into thinking that Northern California is “more down to earth” than Southern California. Please.

Yes, there is the entertainment industry in L.A., and there’s some superficiality that goes along with that, but most people in S. California are very down to earth.

San Francisco, on the other hand, is headquarters for liberal militants. I’m a liberal, but in SF, you better not have a dissenting opinion about anything. And whatever you do – don’t drive an SUV in San Francisco. It’ll probably be torched.

Let me answer your questions. I have lived in San Diego my entire life (I’m 15). So, I know a lot about it. One thing, I think you’re lucky to have white Christmases ^^ Here it feels like it’s summer in the winter, (but, it cannnn get pretty chilly.) Don’t let people fool you when they say that SD has the best perfect weather in the world. Maybe when you come on vacation, yes. But, when you’re living here…it’s boring, same thing everyday. It gets WAY hotter than people say. Sure, summer temps. will be around 70s, but thats what everyone says is the max. No way, Jose. We get 80s a lot, and usually get up to 90s, perhaps high 90s depending on whatever…

The coldest you’ll get here is around 50 during the day, sometimes dropping down to the high 40′s and at night/early morning low 40′s. We rarely go lower than that, to the thrirties. (its happened thou.)

There’s more than just bikinis thou. xD
We live in an interesting place. I suggest, if you move down here, that you go driving up, about an hour or two away, to Julian in the Cuyamaca mountains, if you wanna see snow. (There’s not a ton of it, but there’s some.) When theres a storm from the north usually it brings snow there. But hurry, it melts pretty fast. But its so nice up there. And Julian has the best pies ever. <3

You can basically surf, at the beach and snowboard in one day, here. ((:
And Hollywood is pretty close too icon smile Whats life like in California? And Disneyland. <---

But even though Im so tired of it here, I love it. Its really an amazing place. Lots of attractions ,since its a big tourist city (thou to me it doesnt feel lke it at all.) Have you ever visited?
Of course theres the the San DIego Zoo. Thats always fun. We got Seaworld. Thats cool too. We got beaches, and the nice (s'posedly haunted) Hotel Del Coronado. If you like haunted stuff, visit old town. They got restaurants and an old cemetary where Yankee Jim was burried (He was hanged in the Whaley House.) Visit the Whaley House! its supposed to be pretty haunted. I been there a few times, (Im obsessed with ghosts.) Its an old house from the 1800s I believe, theere was so many deaths there. Its pretty creepy at night. And they got a nice little snack/cafe by the backyard. I've had a few experiences there (if you believe me.) It was even featured on Most Haunted and a lot of tv shows!! xD

We got a lot of shopping centers, depending on where in the city you stay too.
Just your average city stuff. Some other cool things are Balboa Park. That place is so lively! So many things go on over there. They have museums, and special events are always held there. Haunted Trail in the Halloween time, and haunted hotels. Everything is there. Google it.

Gaslamp Quarter , Chula Vista-ish area. Pretty nice too ^^

SD is beautiful. Idk what else to say.

California is awesome man…..this state is so huge, if u like snow we got mountains and skiing and snowboarding….if u like trees and forest with even temperature then Northen Cali is great….. of course if your intrested in beaches and high temperatures then SoCal is where its at.

People are much more social out here then on the east coast…..its much integrated not as much bias which might explain why there are more openly gays and interracial relationships……its an easier enviorment to be yourself in.

Food is great if your into Mexican….I used to live on the east coast i know theres a pizza parlor on every corner……here its burritos and tacos…..both are good.

Wherever u decide to go be prepared for one thing…..
TRAFFIC
if u cant stand being in traffic u better get used to it out here or live somewhere with better public transportation like the larger cities like LA, SanDiego or SanFrancisco which i think probably has the best public transportation system next to NYC but much cleaner.
