Hi,I did the following:

Question: Coastal Ecology Research Topic??? Help!?
Can anyone give me an example of a research project that involves algal blooms, red tides, or other types of hypoxia-related, nutrient-based cycles in coastal estuaries and oceans? THANKS!

Q&A: Doesn’t the song “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)” by Soul singer Marvin Gaye seem eerily prophetic today?
“Oh, mercy mercy me
Oh, things ain’t what they used to be
No, no
Oil wasted on the oceans and upon our seas
Fish full of mercury”

In 4 days it will be exactly 39 years since that song was released… crazy huh??? It’s a great tune if you never heard it.

The surf blog edited the following

Question: Questions on ecology?
1) In Which community would organisms mostly likely have evolved to respond to different photoperiods?
a. coral reef
b. savanna
c. temperate forest
d. abyssal

2) Moving along altitudinal and latitudinal gradients, you’ll find the same sequence of biomes. There are equivalent changes along the gradient in which of the following except
a. temperature
b. humidity
c. vegetation
d. day length

3) Which would be most helpful in solving the world’s environmental problems?
a. increased agricultural productivity
b. increased life expectancy
c. more food from the oceans
d. decreased human birth rates
I don’t think it’s a or b but i’m not sure.

Last question: The pattern of dispersion for a certain species of kelp is clumped. The pattern for a species of snail living on the kelp would be…
a. absolute
b. clumped
c. homogenous
d. uniform
I think it’s d but I’m not sure.

Thanks

Question: Favorite “Green” Metal songs, aka, about the Environment, Ecology, Conservation, etc?
Song’s like Metallica’s Blackened, or Megadeth’s “Countdown to Extinction”, or my favorite:

And what are some of your favorite bands that focus on Nature, not in the Pagan worshiping rocks and trees way, but in the tree hugging, lets not destroy our homes around our ears, sort of way. (although some bands combine both approaches, naturally)

MQ: ^^^^^^^^^^^
MQ2: Opinions on the song, video and band I linked?

BQ:Beach, mountains, desert, forest, ocean, big city, whatever, where is your “ideal” place to live?
BQ2- To vacation?
BQ3- Favorite:
1) Terrestrial animal?
(Polar Bear, though the North American Cougar is close.)
2) Avian?
(Eurasian Eagle-Owl)
3) Aquatic?
(Orca …though virtually any whale will do)
“Help Keep Austin WEIRD!” Gotta love it. Probably my second favorite city in the country, right after San Fransisco (well, the entire Bay Area, really)!
And I find the trickster a fascinating creature too, both in reality and mythology. Song Dogs are only a menace, because we have overdeveloped the world and are in his home!
I still can’t hold it against them. Doesn’t stop me from potting them when on the farm, but it is with no malice. They are doing what they are meant to do. We are still in their homes. I also don’t get irate over cougars and the like (I dive, and truth to tell, if I get ate by a shark.. why blame the shark, I am in it’s habitat, and it is doing what it is supposed to, you know?). We had a beautiful specimen sharing our land in southern Utah, and if it had ever attacked I would have put it down, but as long as it did its thing, and we did ours, we coexisted beautifully, and I got to enjoy watching her. And listening to the song dogs at night!

Q&A: AP Biology Chapter 54 Ecology Help?
1. Primary production
a. is equal to the standing crop of an ecosystem.
b. is greatest in freshwater lakes and streams.
c. is the rate of conversion of light to chemical energy in an ecosystem.
d. is inverted in some aquatic ecosystems.
e. is all of the above.

2. Which of the following is an accurate statement about ecosystems?
a. Energy is recycled through the trophic structure.
b. Energy is uaually captured from sunlight by primary producers, passed to secondary producers in the form of organic compounds, and lost to detrivores in the form of heat.
c. Chemicals are recycled between the biotic and abiotic sectors, whereas energy makes a oneway trip throught the food web and is eventually dissipated as heat.
d. There is a continuous process by which energy is lost as heat, and chemical elements leave the ecosystem through runoff.
e. A food web shows that all trophic levels may feed off each other.

3. In the experiment in which iron was added to the Sargasso Sea, the growth of eukaryotic phytoplankton was stimulated because
a. iron was the limiting nutrient for eukaryotic phytoplankton growth.
b. the iron interacted with bottom sediments, releasing nitrogen and phosphorus into the water.
c. iron interacted with phosphorus, making that nutrient available to the phytophlankton.
d. the iron reached the critical load necessary to promote photosynthesis.
e. iron simulated the growth of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria, which then made nitrogen available for phytoplankton growth.

4. The open ocean and tropical rainforest are the two largest contributors to Earth’s net primary production because
a. both have high rates of net primary production
b. both cover huge surface areas of Earth
c. nutrients cycle fastest in these two ecosystems
d. the ocean covers a huge surface area and the tropical rain forest has a high rate of production
e. both a and b are correct.
